1587: Virginia Dare becomes the first child born of English parents in the New World – seven days after the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh's second expedition in North Carolina.

1920: Tennessee becomes the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees the right of all American women to vote.

1960: The birth control pill –the first oral contraceptive – is launched by the Searle Drug Company in the United States.

1964: South Africa is barred from taking part in the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo over its refusal to condemn apartheid.

1969: Three days and nights of sex, drugs and rock and roll come to a peaceful end as the Woodstock music festival winds down.
